A1

U.S. STRIKE ON SYRIA FUELS UNCERTAINTY ON THE GROUND

"'It would be great if he continued this in the direction of saving more civilians or establishing a safe zone, but after his racist speeches and anti-refugee policy, I think the strike is more for popularity,' said [Yasmine] Masheen, who is now in Germany after fleeing there with her family."

Prove her wrong, Mr. President. Establish safe zones. Get rid of Assad. At the very least, don't let this mess become worse than it already is.

A2

GETTING THE CANARY TO SING

"(The Times's style guide offers a colorful elucidation: Obvious wordplay, such as Rubber Industry Bounces Back, 'should be tested on a trusted colleague the way mine shaft air is tested on a canary. When no song bursts forth, start rewriting.')"

Good one.

A6

FROM ADMIRATION TO DISMAY IN MYANMAR

Exactly.

"Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate once celebrated as a champion of democracy ... insulted the Mon people, the dominant ethnic group in the area, protest leaders said, by naming the bridge for a Burmese leader [her father] infamous here for steamrollering [LS: Really? Steamrollering? Yeah, it's correct!] over their rights."

"The world has been shocked by reports that the military has carried out atrocities, including rape and murder, against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority in western Myanmar, but Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi has said little on the matter and done even less."

How can Buddhists treat other human beings this way?

Dismay and massive disappointment. How did this Nobel Peace Prize winner turn into such a despot?

This paragraph hints at one possible reason:

"Supporters say her ability to get along with the military [who had previously arrested her] is a significant accomplishment. But critics suggest she suffers from Stockholm syndrome, becoming too cozy with her former captors."

A12

U.S. ATTACK ON SYRIA CEMENTS KREMLIN'S EMBRACE OF ASSAD

"By championing Mr. Assad and condemning American 'aggression,' President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia seemed to be burying the idea that he could somehow cooperate with the Trump administration to end the conflict on his terms."

CNN ARTICLE: TIMELINE: DONALD TRUMP'S PRAISE FOR VLADIMIR PUTIN

10/07: "Look at Putin -- what he's doing with Russia -- I mean ... he's doing a great job ..."

12/11: "I respect Putin and Russians but cannot believe that [Obama] allows them to get away with so much ... Hats off to the Russians."

10/13: "[H]e's done really a great job of outsmarting our country."

7/15: "I think I'd get along very well with Vladimir Putin. I just think so."

"I think he respect me. I think it would be great to get along with him."

BANNON'S BELIEFS CAN BE TRACED TO A BOOK THAT WARNS 'WINTER IS COMING'

"The book, 'The Fourth Turning,' a 1997 work by two amateur historians, Neil Howe and William Strauss, lays out a theory that American history unfurls in predictable, 80-year cycles of prosperity and catastrophe. And it foresees catastrophe right around the corner."

Check out Giambattista Vico.

There is very little new under the sun.

SUNDAY REVIEW SR1

CLINTON, FREE TO SPEAK HER MIND

"Asked about the infamous photo of Republic men discussing women's health, Clinton described her favorite internet meme: a group of dogs around a conference table, with the caption, 'today's meeting on feline health care'."

heh heh

SR8

UP AGAINST THE WALL

"A. By the way, if you want to know if a wall works, just ask Israel. Israel built a wall and it works.
Q. And they heave rockets over it.
A. Yeah, I know. Well, no. Now they're doing the rockets, yeah. That's a -- they have a -- they have a different -- they probably have a bigger -- they have a different kind of a problem. You have to build a real wall. They don't have a real wall right now. They don't have a wall that works.

Did you get that?
1. There's a wall in Israel and it works.
2. But it doesn't work."
[LS: 3. Think about it: this man is the President of the United States.]

"It has been a remarkable journey for an idiotic idea that started life as an applause line, as Mr. Trump admitted to The Times.

'If my speeches ever get a little off,' he said, 'I just go: "We will build a wall!" You know, if it gets a little boring, if I see people starting to sort of maybe thinking about leaving -- I can sort of tell the audience -- I just say, "We will build the wall," and they go nuts. "And Mexico will pay for the wall!" But -- ah, but I mean it. But I mean it.'

In other words:
1. The wall is a decoy, a fake, a lie.
2. But he means it.
Did you get that?"

THE PASSION OF SOUTHERN CHRISTIANS

Margaret Renkl writes:

"Republicans now have what they've long wanted: the chance to turn this into a Christian nation."

She then discusses her "liberal/bleeding-heart" passion for poverty, clean water, and health care. She ends her misguided essay with this:

"I hope we'll end up with something that looks a lot like a Christian nation -- not in doctrine but in practice, caring for the least among us and loving our neighbors as ourselves."

But what if your neighbor is not a Christian? Ya still love me?

Lady -- we are not a Christian nation, don't y'all get that yet?

ARTS & LEISURE 6

. . . I (DIDN'T) READ A SCATHING REVIEW

"In the years after 'Whale Music,' I worked steadily, but I still didn't feel like a legitimate actress. After all, I'd starred on a network show for teens and then jumped straight into a Bruce Willis comedy where I ran around topless, wielding a gun."

The Whole Nine Yards

A guilty pleasure. I love this film! Great cast, great story ... at times, hilariously funny.

But people -- I'm a red-blooded male -- Amanda Peet is gorgeous! Plus, my girl Rosanna Arquette is in it.

THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE Page 40

There is nothing like this weekly mag for in-depth stories. This one

'THAT IS GREAT TELEVISION'

is a fantastic read. After Trump and Zucker's (head of CNN) friendship came to an end, Zucker received this e-mail from Trump:

"'Jeff -- Too bad you (CNN) couldn't be honest with how well I did in the debate. The dumbest thing I ever did was get you the job at CNN -- you are the most disloyal person. Just remember, I always seem to find a way to get even. Best wishes, Donald J. Trump.'"

Have a terrific Sunday.
